Digital holography is an exciting new area in optical information processing. We capture digital representations of holograms (whole Fresnel fields) of real-world three-dimensional (3D) objects, that allow us to reconstruct arbitrary views of the object from a small range of angles. There are two aspects to our research: (i) improving the quality of captured and optically reconstructed digital holograms, and (ii) 3D image processing using digital holograms.

(i)  Digital holography has recently become viable with recent advances in CCD resolution and dynamic range. Phase-shifting approaches, for example, allow high quality approximations of the Fresnel field. There are many other approaches that remain to be explored, however, in the search for larger digital holograms with clearer reconstructions and larger angular range. Our approaches will include enhanced phase-shift interferometry algorithms, multiple-camera geometries, characterisation of speckle, and improvements to our phase-encoded (real-time) optical reconstruction technique.
(ii) The digital holograms themselves are complex-valued images. A digital hologram can be regarded as a generalisation of an image. As such, we plan to be the first group to define and demonstrate generalised versions of standard image processing concepts such as segmentation, recognition, noise reduction, compression, watermarking, and, in particular, encryption as applied to digital holograms of 3D objects.

• Postdoctoral researcher

  We have one 18-month position available. We are looking for a researcher with a background in optics, image processing, or both. Applicants with expertise in holography or 3D image processing would be ideal. Applicants can be from anywhere in the world. Salary will be approximately euro 33,400 per year. In addition, travel to selected conferences will be funded.
